The telecommunications industry has created and operates an integral infrastructure in Canada – a competitive strength for the country that has long been associated with economic and community development.

The industry is governed by the Telecommunications Act (Canada) and overseen by the CRTC.

MTS operates as the incumbent telephone company, and former monopoly, in Manitoba.  Allstream operates as the number one competitor to the other incumbent telephone companies in the business markets in the rest of Canada.  Where Allstream serves customers in Manitoba, it is subject to the regulations that are applicable to MTS.
